Anticipating and Acting before Disaster Strikes: Transparent Decision Making & Sovereignty for Climate Justice
Disaster Readiness Summit with The National Center for Disaster Preparedness, 11:00AM - 12:30 PM, Tuesday, Sept 22nd at Teachers College, Columbia University

What if you could take action before a crisis, using a forecast? In this El Niño year, anticipatory action projects are doing that right now, as droughts and floods are happening around the globe, they are activating millions of dollars of pre-funded disaster action before the disasters happen!
But they are far from perfect–forecasts arent always right! There are tough tradeoffs for disaster managers between acting earlier and having enough information. The people responsible for managing disasters must have true agency and governance as they decide how much to bank on forecasts–We need to carefully bridge the gap between the science and decisionmaking, and work hard to improve transparency if we are to have more than a rebranded alert but something greater that honors sovereignty for climate justice.
In this highly interactive session, we will use actual project tools, inviting perspectives from high level leadership to nitty gritty implementers and explore how to move forward with the challenges in Anticipatory Action. Critically, we will work through ways that communities and local leadership can drive its design and operation.
Tired of the same old buzzwords? Please be thinking of new Buzzwords that are valuable to be able to help people talk about the most important things in Anticipatory Action.
